Sweating the Small Stuff: The Hidden Toll of Heat on Athletes

The world is hot—and so is the competition. But this summer, athletes are battling more than each other. From youth tournaments in southern Europe to NFL training camps in Arizona, the weather has become a quiet opponent, influencing performance, safety, and long-term career trajectories.

In parts of Spain and Italy, where daily highs regularly surpass 40°C (104°F), organizers of summer tournaments have had to reschedule games to early mornings or late evenings. Yet even with precautions, performance data shows declines in endurance, higher injury rates, and increased dropout due to heat exhaustion. A 2023 British Journal of Sports Medicinestudy noted that every 1°C increase in ambient temperature above 30°C correlated with a 5% increase in non-contact injuries across youth soccer matches.

In the U.S., the NFL preseason is underway, and many franchises are confronting extreme heat with old-school stoicism—but that approach may no longer be sustainable. During the 2024 preseason, over a dozen players across the league suffered heat-related issues, forcing teams to rethink two-a-days and hydration protocols. The Dallas Cowboys reportedly installed additional cooling infrastructure at their Oxnard camp, while the Miami Dolphins have partnered with sports scientists to track internal body temperatures in real time.

High temperatures do not just impact the body—they influence decision-making and mental stamina. Research on tennis players at the Australian Open has shown marked increases in unforced errors during matches played in 35°C+ conditions, likely due to cognitive fatigue caused by thermal stress. In track and field, sprinters have reported difficulty maintaining focus and rhythm during races held under a blazing sun, even when heat isn’t considered a direct performance factor.

Youth sports may be the most vulnerable area. Without the resources of professional teams—trainers, recovery gear, or even shaded facilities—many young athletes are left exposed. Some U.S. high schools are delaying football practice until after 8 p.m. or moving training indoors altogether. But this often clashes with traditionalist coaching mentalities that view heat as a test of toughness.

The heat is not going away. As climate volatility increases, sport will need to evolve, not just in tactics and training, but in philosophy. Heat is not a rite of passage—it is a variable that affects performance, health, and the future of athletic development. And in August, that is impossible to ignore.
